HISTORY / BACKGROUND:
The M16A1E1 was an attempt to improve the M16A1.
Rifles were built and sent to the U.S. Marines for testing starting in 1981.
The initial M16A1E1s had A2 handguards and heavy barrels similar to the 606. The other features were
A1 style.
Further modifications were made to the M16A1E1 until it was what would eventually become the 701
M16A2. Note: The 701 was adopted November 1983.
Modifications that were made include: 1/7 twist barrel, longer stock, finger bump on the pistol grip,
round handguards, square front sight post, case deflector, Delta ring, round button forward assist,
strengthened lower, 3 round burst, checkered and strengthened buttplate.
Also tested on the 645E was an experimental flat top upper with folding flip up sights.
Note : The 645S was a semi auto only version.
