February 2009 Pea Plant Fungus

This fungus finally killed off our pea plants.
But we had a great season anyways.
Most days near the end we were harvesting 30-40 peas every other day.

Square Foot Gardening

I recently decided to rebuild my 4'x 10' row garden into a 2'x10' Square Foot Garden.
The main problem has been keeping the puppy out of the garden.
I first put up a 2' fence made out of plastic "chicken wire".
The puppy ate the fence and then got into the garden.
I replace it with metal chicken wire.
But now she can jump over the fence and dig in my nice friable soil.
I've just installed an underground electric fence.
She still has gotten into the garden a couple of times but she doesn't do much damage.
If this was a standard 4'x 4' it would be easy to completly cover with chicken wire, but the size and location doesn't allow me to cover it.

Old Row Gardening Pictures

800 pounds of dirt is approximately 6" deep.
After taking this photo Nathaniel and I added another 600 pounds of dirt.

Bed Size: 10' x 4' x 10"

Corner Braces. Braces are attached with deck screws.
Bottom brace is a 3" wide L-bracket. It is normally buried.

Raised bed is built with nontreated 2"x10"x10' to prevent chemicals from leeching into the vegetables.

We planted peas and carrots Nov 2006.

Caterpillers have been munching the carrots. :(

Peas are coming in good. (March 2007)

Daily harvest of peas.

We planted a couple of tomato plants and a strawberry plant March 7, 2007.
Since this picture we've added "Better Reds" mulch film.
We'll see how the mulch helps.

Daily harvest is current about 6 cherry tomatoes per day. (May 11, 2007)
Daily harvest is current 10-12 cherry tomatoes per day. (May 22, 2007)
So far we've been able to water just from the rainwater harvesting system.
